Inland shrimp farms: socio-economics and environmental impact review (in English)
Inland shrimp farming became a controversial issue in Thailand primarily because of its perceived impacts on the environment. The author discusses some social and economic issues related to the decision making of shrimp and non-shrimp farmers in turning crop lands into shrimp farms. This paper focuses on cost-benefit analysis of coastal and inland shrimp farming from a survey of shrimp farms in Samut Sakhon province in 1997. General information on the impact of inland shrimp farms on the environment is also reviewed; the very few studies so far conducted on this sensitive issue and the comments from researchers and academics, farmer groups, and government authorities were digested into an overview of the environmental impact of inland shrimp farming.
